Proper Turfgrass Selection

The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay

2013 08 30 08.00.22In 2003 The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay converted the turfgrass on its greens from bentgrass to Champion Ultradwarf bermuda grass.  This change was to provide a better putting surface for golfers during the summer months when most golf is played, but it also had many environmental and economic benefits as well.  Due to less disease pressure compared with bentgrass, the bermuda allowed Bear Trace to reduce the costs of chemical inputs on the greens from $39,000.00 to $8,000.00.  Not having to be hand watered each day generated a reduction of over a million gallons of water per year and hundreds of man-hours, helping to save thousands of dollars each year.
